Grow Home is an adventure exploration platformer developed by Ubisoft Reflections and published by Ubisoft. The people of Reflections originally developed it for internal use, but the headmasters of Ubisoft heard the idea and they decided to improve it and release it. Thus, do not expect a much-worked game in which graphics, physics, storyline and those things have been polished and tested to the limits. Grow Home is an experiment, and indie release who only purpose is to ensure the players have a nice time.
Having said this, let’s start with the review. Once you download Grow Home, you will become BUD (Botanical Utility Droid), and you mission will be making the "Star Plant" grow in order to go home. You have been sent to land to investigate the flora of the planet. So, you will have to find the Star Plant and make it grow to come back to your spaceship.
The graphics of this adventure game have a minimalist style, and it is extremely simple and polygonal. It has neither textures nor shadows, there are only polygons. However, do not think the graphics are ugly or badly worked; the treatment of the color and light is a pleasure to the eye. The procedural animations of BUD are fantastic, and will immerse you into its fantasy world. The drawing and the details of the graphics aspect will make you fall in love with the environments and of course, with BUD.
Explore a new vertical world
Our protagonist BUD will move in a very clumsy way, and he has the ability to grab any surface, so it does not matter the material, verticality, etc. You just have to press the buttons and he will grab at something wherever he is. Nevertheless, you will have to have a lot of coordination to make him climb because each limb is controlled by a different button. This way, you have to coordinate hands and feet to avoid a high fall. The rest of actions you can carry out with BUD going from jumping and jumping with an extra boost to running, zooming the camera and just a bit more. As you can see, the simplicity is one if its strongest points.
Grow Home is an experiment, and indie release who only purpose is to ensure the players have a nice time
As you explore the planet you are on, and the growing Star Plant, you will discover new species of fauna and flora. Some of them are just decoration, but others are quite useful, such as the plants that allow you to glide or the ones that give you a boost to jump. You are free to use them, but just for a limited number of times.
In order to make the Star Plant grow, you will have to connect its branches to some floating rocks that have energy inside. Of course, the branches only grow to a limited distance, so you will have to carefully aim at the energy rock and calculate the distance. There will be innumerable branches that will form an intricate labyrinth. In addition, as your plant grows up and becomes taller, everything will be much more vertical, and thus, much more complicated.
