Five Nights at Freddy's 3 is an indie survival horror game developed and published by Scott Cawthon. It is the third installment in this terrifying point and click adventure, and now, there are more jumpscares than ever! The Five Nights at Freddy's saga has become, in just eight months, ones of the most viral games nowadays. Lots of things have changed in this installment, but not the fear and tension you will feel when playing.
There are no flashlights, doors, masks nor anything to defend yourself with
This horror game is set thirty years after the events of FNaF. Freddy Fazbear's Pizza has closed down, and the events that occurred there are now mere urban legends and rumors. However, they have opened a new establishment named "Fazbear's Fright: The Horror Attraction" in order to capitalize on the story and revive the legend. The owners have looked for all the items they could save from the old establishment, and Fazbear's Fright is full of old toys, posters, pieces of animatronics, etc. However, everything changes when they find the star of the attraction...an old animatronic. Of course, someone has to watch the nights of the attraction, and to do not worry, it will be you. You will not be a night watch, you will be an actor whose role is the night watch, (how ironic...), but anyway, you have to spend nights there.
As usual, the artistic aspect is more conspicuous that the graphics one. The style is simple, following the line of the previous installments. Now, your office is not so closed since it has a huge window in front of you (and they can watch you there...) The macabre design of the animatronics is more sinister (if possible), and the jumpscares will make you scare your socks off.
More Vulnerable than Ever: Mechanics
In Five Nights at Freddy's 3 there two main elements to control. There are no flashlights, doors, masks nor anything, you just have two sets of cameras and the terminal. In the cameras, you can check the rooms to look for menaces, but you will not be able to turn the lights on. The main camera set shows you the rooms 1 to 10 (this time they have no names), and the second set shows you the vents and the rooms 10 to 15.
There are two things you can do with the cameras apart from watching; activate the audio and shut down the vents. The audio will activate the laugh of a boy (the Balloon Boy concretely) and it serves to attract the Springtrap. Sealing the vents will impede the animatronic from moving through that vent. If you keep the vents closed for a long time, the oxygen supply will be lower and you will start having hallucinations that will distract you from the real threat.
The terminal is a kind of computer from which you can control the correct functioning of the audio, cameras and ventilation systems. When some jumpscare is activated, some system will have errors that will impede their correct performance. With the terminal, you can reboot the system to make them work again, but it will take some time in which you are completely defenseless against the attacks of your enemy. If the system fails and after a while, you have not fixed them, it will sound an alarm and the lights will turn red. This will attract your enemy to your office, so be fast.
Meet Springtrap and the Hallucinations: Animatronics
I have news for you, this time, there is only one animatronic that can really hurt you. Nevertheless, do not think that this will make the things easier for you, don't fool yourself. The new animatronic is named Springtrap and he is in hunting mode from his very first appearance. It can be very dangerous if you not take the necessary measures to stop it. His pattern is quite chaotic and for this reason, you will not know from where he will try to reach you. He can move through the rooms as well as the vents.
They cannot harm you, nor provoke the Game Over, but they can distract you time enough for Springtrap to catch you
However, do not think that Springtrap is the only menace; the ghosts of the old animatronics are still in this place. Thus, once you download this release and start playing it, Phantom Freddy, Phantom Chica y Phantom Foxy from FNaF, and Phantom Mangle, Phantom Puppet and Phantom Balloon Boy from FNaF2 could all appear. They cannot harm you, nor provoke the Game Over, but they can distract you for long enough for Springtrap to catch you. In addition, and what is more important, they can cause failures in your systems and disable the cameras, the audio or the doors of the vents.
Usually, you can avoid them by not staring at them, but sometimes they are not visible enough. If you stare at them for a long time, they will jumpscare you as soon as they can, and once this occurs, you will have to quickly reboot the systems. Due to this, in Five Nights at Freddy's 3 you can have even three consecutive jumpscares including phantoms and Springtrap, so prepare yourself to suffer.
Discover the Story: Minigames
Scott Cawthon wants to reveal the story of the saga through the minigames he has added to Five Nights at Freddy's 3. There is a minigame that is repeated every time you beat a night. In it, you will control one of the four first animatronics and your mission will be following the Purple Man. In fact, you can only follow him, and when you reach a certain place, he will turn and carve you up. In the fifth night, instead of an animatronic, you will be a crying kid. The purple man will be scared of you and he will try to flee, but he will enter the Springtrap costume, and because of the wires and metal he will die. This means that the Purple Man was the murderer in the incident of the kids and that he is in fact the inhabitant of Springtrap.
There are additional minigames that can be triggered by performing actions such as clicking on determined items, staring at certain points, etc. They are have also a similar style to the Atari games, and depending on how you do it in these minigames, you will trigger different endings for the main game. There are three endings in Five Nights at Freddy's 3: Good, Neutral and Bad. If you are brave, you are free to replay this title the times you want to discover the three endings.
